Cost vs. Value Report: How much are you getting back on your home remodel?

Home remodel seems to be a big deal lately for those keeping and selling homes. But in order to make the best out of the costs associated with home remodels, homeowners need to be selective about which areas to look at and which areas to avoid. There are plenty of areas in the home that can get you back what you spent and more.

In the mid-range cost project section, the one remodeling project that will cost the least and have a high recoup percentage is a steel entry door replacement. Averaging $1,137 with a resale value of $974 and an 85.6% cost recoup, it’s almost a best bet. Other high cost recoup remodels include an attic bedroom, basement remodel, wood deck addition, and garage door replacement. All of these projects have a cost recoup percentage around 70%. Mid-range projects that may not be worth it: Home office remodel, sunroom addition, and backup generator.

In the upscale project range, the worthy projects are less and include a garage door replacement, fiber-cement siding replacement, and vinyl window replacement. A master suite addition, on the other hand, gets you 50% back.
