Protect Yourself During a Move with These Tips

Moving can be a very exciting yet stressful time. While you are getting ready for new beginnings, it also means that you have to pack up all of your belongings and drive them to a new location. Hiring movers can help to ease the process, but can also come with its own set of risks. Keep these tips in mind to help protect yourself during a move.

  • Do some research – before you hire any mover, make sure to research all of the companies in the area and get referrals. Ask your friends and family, and even your real estate agent for referrals on the best moving company.
  • Check licensing. All interstate movers have to be licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Make sure to check their licensing and look for any complaints, especially federal ones.
  • Do not go with the lowest bid. While the lowest bid may save you money, it can also put you in a dangerous situation. Make sure to get at least three estimates, and disregard any companies that give estimates that are way too low, since it can be a sign that they are unethical.
  • Have a plan. Even with months of planning, there is no way to ensure everything will go smoothly. Make sure to make a plan and pack essentials with you, such as a change of clothes and toiletries, just in case the moving van does not make it on time.
  • Invest in protection. Most moving companies offer some type of insurance that will provide coverage in case any of your belongings are damaged or destroyed. Even though it will cost more, it will save you money if you end up with broken belongings.
