Common Home Renovations to Avoid

Making renovations to your home is a great way to make the space more comfortable for your family. While most renovations will also increase the value of your home, there are some that will do the opposite. Make sure to avoid these common resale home upgrades to ensure that you can get the best price for your home.

  • Outdated finishes – when you are renovating a room, make sure to update everything, even the light switches and outlets. If the color of your walls are right on trend, it will not matter if there is a wobbly ceiling fan or if your have popcorn ceilings.
  • Awkward spaces – knocking down walls to create a bigger kitchen or master bedroom may seem like a good idea, but make sure you consider the rest of the rooms in the house. Avoid knocking down any walls that will turn what was once a a bathroom into a bedroom.
  • Conversions – building a media room in your house may be perfect for your family, but it does not work for a large majority of buyers. Make sure all conversions that you do will appeal to a large range of buyers, not just your family.
  • Expensive luxuries – building expensive things to maintain luxury items, such as greens and koi ponds may create the look you desire, but buyers will only see the cost to upkeep the area.
  • Bad additions – adding onto your home for more space is a great way to add value, as long as it is done well. If the addition does not match the house or looks like it could fall down at any moment, it could be a huge burden when you are selling your home.
