What Items Should You Leave When Moving?

Moving Tips

When you are moving, it is easy to start packing up everything that you see. However, there are some items that should stay with the house to help the buyer feel as if they are moving into a complete home. Keep these tips on what you should take with you and what you should leave in mind to ensure that you do not make a bigger hassle for yourself when moving.

Items that should stay with the house include:

  • Custom fit items – anything that was made to specifically fit an area of your house, such as plantation shutters or blinds.
  • Hardware – if you had swapped out the original hardware in your kitchen or bath, you should leave them, or replace them with other hardware if you want to take them with you.
  • Alarm systems – unless you have a wireless alarm system that is meant to be removed, leave the system installed and simply cancel or move your service.
  • Wall mounts – if you have a wall mount to hold up a picture or TV that would damage the wall if you took it down, you should leave it.

There are also many items that you have the opportunity to take with you, but should consider leaving, such as:

  • Appliances – many homebuyers, especially first time home buyers, do not have their own appliances, and are willing to pay a little extra for appliances that are left in the house.
  • Kitchen built-ins – pantry organization, windowsill shelves, and built in spice racks can be a strong selling point for a house.
  • Light fixtures – if you installed new, upgraded light fixtures, a buyer may be willing to increase their offer if you leave the item in the house.
