Moving? Have a Garage Sale!

Yard Sale Tips

One of the worst parts of selling your home is packing up and moving all of your belongings. While you cannot leave all of your items and start new, there are probably some items that do not need to make the move. Having a yard sale right before you move can help to ensure that your moving load is as light as possible. Keep these yard sale tips in mind to ensure that you can lighten your load while padding your wallet.

  • Advertise – if nobody knows about your yard sale, nobody can come. At least a week before your sale, start advertising. Put an ad up on Craigslist, pin a flyer up in your local coffee shop, and put up signs in your neighborhood. The more notice people have, the more likely they are to show up.
  • Time it right – check the forecast for the weekend that you are planning to hold your sale to make sure that the weather will be nice. Also, make sure to avoid holiday weekends since many people will be out of town or spending time with their family at their house.
  • Price it right – keep in mind that people are going to garage sales to find a good deal. While you may think that your belongings are worth more, a few extra dollars in your pocket is better than moving with all of your unwanted belongings.
  • Make a free box – put a box at the front of your yard with a large and prominent “free” sign. The thought of getting something for free can be enough to attract people to your yard.
  • Donate the rest – donate anything that you do not sell so that you do not have to worry about moving it to your new house.
