Is Your House Ready For The Cold?

Winter Home Maintenance Tips

These winter home maintenance tips will help you get your house ready for the cold.

Although California’s famous for its great weather year-round, it does cool down in the winter months. You don’t have to worry about ice or snow, but you still want to make sure you’re going to be able to keep the chilly air out. Get your home ready for the cooler weather ahead by using these handy winter home maintenance tips.

  • Wrap your Water Heater. Odds are high that your home’s water heater is somewhere unheated like your garage or basement. That means that heat is escaping off it all the time, making it work harder (and costing you more). Get an insulation blanket that fits your heater and wrap it up with it to prevent energy waste and save as much as nine percent on your water heating costs!
  • Caulk your Cracks. Prevent warm air from escaping your house and cold air from leaking in with caulking. If you can fit a nickel in the gap between windows/doors and your home’s siding, fill it with caulking. Also, install new weather stripping as needed so air isn’t flowing under your doors.
  • Check your Chimney. Before you light the first fire of the year in your fireplace, have it inspected and cleaned by a professional chimney sweep. Then, light your fire carefully using completely dry hardwoods and place a metal grate in front of your fire while it’s lit.

Of course, before you can put any of these winter home maintenance tips to good use, you need a home to maintain!
