Tips to Keep Your Yard Looking Its Best Through the Drought

Drought Tolerant Landscaping Tips

With the fourth year of the California drought showing no signs of rainfall any time soon, it is time to take a look at your yard. While you do not have to turn your yard into a dust bowl, you should reconsider your sprawling lawn. Keep these drought tolerant landscaping tips in mind to ensure that your yard continues to look its best throughout the drought.

  • Choose native plants – native plants do not require as much water and are much more resistant to diseases and pests in the area. Since they are well established in the local environment, they do not require a lot of fertilizer for them them to thrive. Ask your local nursery which plants will work best in your yard.
  • Group plants together – put your plants in groups by how much water they need to help cut down on the amount of water that you need to use. You can avoid over-watering or under-watering your plants since all the plants in one area will need the same amount.
  • Invest in a good mulch – mulch can help reduce the amount of evaporation after watering, allowing your plants to benefit from as much water as possible. Organic mulches are best, since they will also work to breakdown and add nutrients to the soil.
  • Water more efficiently – water in the early morning when temperatures are at their coolest to avoid as much evaporation as possible. Watering at night will promote mildew and fungus growth since the plants do not have the chance to dry out in the sun.
  • Avoid steep slopes – watering plants that are on steep slopes can lead to a lot of wasted water, since the water will simply run down the hill. Plant plants that have deeper roots and install rocks and pebbles to help catch the water around the plants.
