How to Make a Small Backyard Your Private Oasis

You bought the home of your dreams, unpacked and moved in. Your TV is hooked up, computer connected and you are even getting the mail you had forwarded. The walls are painted and everything seems perfect until you realize your big yard is a big job! The first time didn’t seem so bad but after a few weeks you have to mow. Then you start to notice that plants need watering, bushes need trimming and the dreaded weeds keep growing. You need help! You need backyard therapy!

Backyard therapy is giving yourself a reason to do all of your outdoor chores. Did you entertain friends outside before you moved into your dream home? Did you ever have a reason to entertain outside? Well, you have a dream home now so show it off! Have dinner outside and after your guests tell you how beautiful your yard is, you will want to do more!

If your yard came complete with a patio or a full-blown veranda, then any type of furniture will do if you have a style that matches. Placing your furniture on a stone or brick surface will keep wood patio furniture out of the soil and wrought iron away from moisture. But if you want your guests to relax, give them a seat with a cushion. They will only relax after their body does and with a good cushion they may spend the night if you don’t wake them.

Everyone loves a pool and cleaning the pool is a necessity if you want to use it. But to entertain you have to maintain the area around the pool. Dress it up with matching furniture from the patio, add a couple of lounge chairs and you will have a party every weekend. Add a beautiful polished Spanish marble table and chairs and no one will notice the weeds.

A deck can be an excellent stage to show off your work. Its’ elevated view allows guests to see more of your yard from a single place. Wrought iron furniture is heavy and without proper footing will mark up the wood flooring when dragged. A good compliment to a wood deck is teak furniture. The longest lasting wood used in outdoor furniture, teak will outlast your deck with proper care.

Porches offer the same elevated view as a deck but are traditionally painted. Although teak would look very nice, outdoor wicker is the preferred choice. Resin outdoor wicker has a lightweight aluminum frame so it will not damage your porch if you drag it. The resin is made in many colors to compliment the color of your porch and will never have to be painted because it is UV resistant so it will not fade.

Love your flower or herb garden but decided the work is too much? It is if you are the only one who looks at it. Garden furniture is the dream of many because you can add your herbs to your meal, carry it out to your garden set, and smell the fresh flowers right next to you. This goes beyond relaxation, this is pure enjoyment!

If all you have is a backyard then that is all you need. The only difference between garden furniture and lawn furniture is where you place it. They both sit on the ground and as wood and rattan wicker will rot and eventually attract insects and wrought iron will rust, aluminum is the perfect solution. It’s easy to move when you mow, made in every style of furniture from southern wicker to modern deco, and will hold up to the harshest environment. If your yard floods just hose it off, let it dry, and it is ready. No work!

If you don’t have a yard but have a balcony, then you don’t have to give up your outdoor lifestyle. The big mistake here is buying a balcony or bar set as the seats are higher and leaning the wrong way could cause you to fall over the railing. A bistro set is ideal for intimate dining for two. If your balcony is large enough you can add two more chairs for cocktails with a view.

Put your therapy into motion! Get rocking on a southern style rocker or swing your troubles away on a swing. Studies have shown that you sleep more deeply when you are moving, not that you should sleep outside, but just feel more relaxed.

The great outdoors is the ultimate dining room!
