How to Reduce Home Energy Use–and Cost

  • Have your power company perform a home energy audit annually.
  • Add more insulation to your attic and/or walls.
  • Turn down (or up, if A/C is running) your thermostat by at least two degrees.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to turn off heat or A/C during the workday, setting it to turn on around 1/2 hour before you return.
  • Turn down your hot water tank thermostat by 10 degrees or set the temperature to 120 degrees.
  • Repair all leaky faucets, saving you around 20 kilowatts per month per dripping faucet.
  • Replace incandescent lightbulbs with CFBs (compact fluorescent bulbs).
